It&#8217;s Here."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flying cars may not be on the horizon just yet, but autonomous mowers are one future technology that\u2019s becoming a reality. \u201cWe placed our first GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway mowers for field testing in 2022,\u201d says Greg Lawrence, senior director of global product marketing at Toro. \u201cThat gave us a lot of valuable insights, and we\u2019re continuing to fine-tune that technology based on what we learned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, Florida, is one of the sites that has been testing Toro\u2019s autonomous technology with promising results. Todd Draffen, the Club\u2019s director of agronomy, first heard about the opportunity from his local Toro distributor two years ago. \u201cI think it&#8217;s an innovative idea,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd anytime you can be involved in testing and be on the forefront of new technology, that&#8217;s exciting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New Technology Turns Heads<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the two autonomous Toro<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> mowers arrived at the Club, Draffen says they were a novelty. One of the first times his crew used them, a caddy with a group of golfers noticed them right away. \u201cHe came running over and started asking about them. Same with our general manager and our golf pro \u2014 they were very intrigued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also an adjustment for the crew, who kept their distance at first. \u201cIt was almost comical to watch. They weren\u2019t sure how or if they should approach the mowers,\u201d Draffen recalls. \u201cBut now they\u2019re used to what they do and how they do it, so it doesn\u2019t affect them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Club is testing the mowers on fairways, and one benefit they\u2019ve noticed is the accuracy of the mow pattern. \u201cThe visual appearance is fantastic,\u201d Draffen says. \u201cIt does much better than any human can right now as far as straight lines and widths.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/videoshare.toro.com\/watch\/mV8GWLu7GVgYG2QF9FsX8v?\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower Preview\" rel=\"noopener\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vidyard.com\/thumbnails\/24366170\/rEDzjIrw7-tJDPyeHFwLZMDH3OinuOzw_play_button_small.jpg\" alt=\"GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower Preview\">\n<\/a>\n<br>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower Montage<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/videoshare.toro.com\/watch\/mV8GWLu7GVgYG2QF9FsX8v?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><strong>Potential for Increased Productivity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the testing phase, an operator still needs to monitor each machine \u2014&nbsp; but Draffen is excited about the potential to enhance productivity in the future. \u201cIf we can find better, faster ways for our people to do their jobs, that will help our industry tremendously,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toro\u2019s autonomous technology aims to help courses make the most effective use of available labor, for example, by allowing more time for hands-on detail work that enhances value for players and club members. That\u2019s an important benefit as golf courses continue to face challenges with labor shortages and budget constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Set Up for Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety is another important factor for many courses considering autonomous technology, and Draffen has been impressed with the way the Toro mowers have performed. \u201cThe precautions they\u2019ve put in place are phenomenal,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the setup process includes mapping the property to set specific boundaries in which the machine can operate autonomously. When the mower reaches the edge of this predefined \u201cwork zone\u201d based on satellite positioning, it stops.
