When you want a true picture of what a piece of equipment can do, you ask the people who use it every day. So we recently talked with a few golf courses about their experiences with the Toro Reelmaster\u00ae<\/sup> 5010-H hybrid fairway mower<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These golf course superintendents have had their 5010-H units anywhere from a few months to a full year, and a few of the same key benefits kept coming up in our conversations. Here\u2019s a look at what stands out for them about the Reelmaster 5010-H so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cFuel consumption is excellent.\u201d
\n<\/strong>\u201cWe just did a quick figure the other day and right now we\u2019re looking at about 30 percent, which is huge,\u201d says Don Kessler of Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon in Beaumont, Calif. \u201cI like the electric motor drive on the reels and the \u2018hybridness\u2019 of it \u2013 to where the fuel consumption is excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Huesgan, superintendent at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., has also noticed fuel savings with his two 5010-H mowers. \u201cWe haven\u2019t quantified it because we have quite a large operation, but I think it\u2019s probably in the neighborhood of 20 to 25 percent less fuel,\u201d he estimates. \u201cI like the fact that it\u2019s a hybrid. So not only are we saving fuel consumption, we are also doing the right thing for the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quite a bit quieter.\u201d
\n<\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s quiet \u2013\u00a0much quieter than its predecessor,\u201d notes Nathan Gingrich, superintendent of Estero Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. Adds Huesgan, \u201cI like that the noise level is much lower than the conventional, prior generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similar observations came from Ross Laubscher, superintendent at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. \u201cWe run a couple of 5410s that are the older model, and [the 5010-H] is quite a bit quieter,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s simple to operate and user friendly.\u201d
\n<\/strong>All of the superintendents we talked to commented on the unit\u2019s ease of use. \u201cIt\u2019s simple to operate and user friendly,\u201d Huesgan says. \u201cThe InfoCenter is nice in terms of adjusting for your ground speed and your frequency of cut. And from an operator standpoint, there\u2019s no prolonged fatigue from excessive engine noise. The operators I have all enjoy running that mower.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s simple \u2013 that\u2019s what I like about it,\u201d echoes Kessler. \u201cI like the versatility, overall, where we can program the speeds for operators and so forth, so they can\u2019t play with it. We have a lot of control over it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy to operate,\u201d Laubscher confirms. \u201cPlus, as far as the clip rate goes, we\u2019re able to set that speed and the reel speed and the height of cut, so it\u2019s really easy. It\u2019s nice. And it\u2019s not something that an operator can really get into too much, so it stays put.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe quality of cut is excellent.\u201d
\n<\/strong>Another thing all four superintendents like about the 5010-H is the cut. We heard, \u201cThe quality of cut is excellent,\u201d again and again. The Reelmaster 5010-H with 7-inch reels was the first Toro fairway mower to feature the new EdgeSeries™ cutting reels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe run the Toro EdgeMax bedknives on that reel setup,\u201d Huesgan explains. \u201cIt holds the quality of cut so well. We check it every day it goes out, of course, but very rarely are we finding that it\u2019s out of line. It\u2019s really good and reliable in terms of holding the quality of cut.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laubscher credits the quality of cut to the fact that operators can\u2019t change much about the settings. \u201cI think that\u2019s probably why it cuts a little better,\u201d he observes. \u201cPlus, the reels seem to be heavier with the electric motor, so we like the quality of cut because it\u2019s pressing down a little bit more.\u201d Laubscher uses 7-inch (17.8 cm) reels due to the grass conditions at his course, which is near Las Vegas.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mechanic says it\u2019s easier to set up as far as height of cut and adjustment,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt stays in adjustment really well but if he does have to touch it, it\u2019s really quick for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been solid \u2014\u00a0no complaints whatsoever.\u201d
\n<\/strong>Maintenance was another area where the superintendents saw a benefit. \u201cIt\u2019s a good unit \u2013 easy to use and easy to service,\u201d Kessler comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been solid \u2013 no complaints whatsoever,\u201d Huesgan says. \u201cWe have our regular service intervals that we come to, but beyond that, no repairs, no issues. It\u2019s been great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think, given its hybrid nature, there\u2019s less involved with the hydraulics,\u201d Huesgan continues. \u201cCertain components of the machine are hydraulically driven, whereas other components are electrically driven \u2013\u00a0so with less hydraulics, there\u2019s a lot fewer hydraulic lines, hydraulic pumps, and less chance for hydraulic leaks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re happy with it,\u201d Laubscher adds. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a couple of instances where the operator hit a piece of iron, and the reel automatically stops and gives you a warning. If it can\u2019t go, it won\u2019t, so you don\u2019t cause any more damage.\u201d He also appreciates the reduced risk of hydraulic leaks. \u201cWe\u2019re happy to have no hydraulic hoses,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
