Can a mower really save fuel, cut operating costs and reduce your carbon footprint while still providing sufficient power for demanding mowing conditions? It can if it’’s Toro’s new Reelmaster® 5010-H hybrid fairway mower. As the industry’s first and only fairway mower with a true hybrid drive system, the Reelmaster 5010-H is the perfect example of Turfonomics at work.

Top Line Thinking

The key to achieving these savings without compromising on quality of cut is Toro’s new patented PowerMatch™ technology. It enables the Reelmaster 5010-H to match the power generated to the power required for the vehicle and the cutting units based on the mowing conditions.

The PowerMatch system pairs a 24.8 hp Kubota® diesel engine (compliant with Tier 4 regulations) with an inline motor generator and a self-charging 48-volt battery pack. When hilly terrain or more challenging mowing conditions demand more power, the battery pack takes the load of the cutting units away from the engine, leaving more available horsepower for the traction circuit.

In more extreme situations where even more horsepower may be required for verticutting or scalping, the batteries take on the cutting unit load and send the reserve battery power back through the motor generator — boosting engine power to the equivalent of over 40 horsepower.

During typical mowing conditions, roughly 70% of the time, the Reelmaster 5010-H has ample power from the diesel engine to support both traction and cutting. This allows for plenty of time to automatically keep batteries charged and the system functioning optimally. The result is plenty of power — both when and where it is most needed.

Bottom Line Thinking
In addition to efficiency, the PowerMatch system delivers measurable bottom-line savings. Depending on terrain and cutting conditions, you could see an average fuel savings of 20% compared to a conventional fairway mower and even more when you choose to run in Economy mode.

Toro’s unique design also reduces maintenance time by eliminating all of the cutting unit’s hydraulic components — the equivalent of up to $1,100 in parts and labor savings for every 800 to 1,000 hours of operation.* More than 100 potential hydraulic leak points were removed from the cutting unit system by switching from hydraulic cutting unit motors to electric cutting unit motors. Both the time and cost of maintaining your fairway mower are meaningfully reduced.

Real World Thinking
Efficiency and labor savings are important, but you shouldn’t have to sacrifice power to get them. Rest assured that with over 40 available horsepower, the PowerMatch™ system can handle verticutting, scalping and steep hills. In fact, the Reelmaster 5010-H can perform at least on par — and in many cases better than — much higher-horsepower machines. Three years of vigorous field and real-world testing have proven the Reelmaster 5010-H has the power to perform in the most rigorous golf course conditions.

In addition, the Reelmaster 5010-H has an InfoCenter display that makes maintenance and diagnostics quicker and easier for technicians. The onboard LCD display provides system information, alerts, service reminders, diagnostics, fault codes, and precise vehicle and cutting unit adjustments.

Beyond these features, the new Reelmaster 5010-H also features Plug ‘n’ Mow technology, which allows it to accept 5-inch or 7-inch diameter DPA cutting units in 8 or 11 blade configurations. Simply plug in the applicable cutting unit reel motors and the machine automatically makes the necessary adjustments — another time-saver and yet another way to provide the cut quality you desire for any conditions.

Available in March 2015, the Reelmaster 5010-H also offers a wide range of attachments, including groomers, a rear roller brush, a fairway grooming brush, a verticutter cutting unit and flex-bottom grass baskets. Other options include CrossTrax® all-wheel drive, an air-ride suspension seat and a sunshade.
